lingking verb

  1. Linking Verb
                        Linking verb is verb that link between subject and object or complement. Often use to change to be to show something that have related condition and the five sense.
To be
To do
To have
Is
Am
Are,etc
Did
Does
Do, etc
Have
Has
Had,etc

Example:
ü  Celine Dion is the greatest singer
ü  Dachi is more beautiful than tukiyem
ü  David archuleta is the best singer for me

            The Object
                        An object in grammar is part of a sentence, and often part of the predicate. It denotes somebody or something involved in the subject's "performance" of the verb.
There are two types of the object. They are :
Direct Object
        A noun or a pronoun.
        Follows an action verb.
        Receives the action of a verb
        A direct object can be found by asking Whom? or What? about an action verb
Example of Direct Object
v I give the book
The book is  direct object that receive action
v  The old man chewed his food
Food is direct object

Indirect Object
        A noun or a pronoun.
        Tells to whom or to what or for whom or for what the action of the verb is done.
Example of Indirect Object
        I give the book to my friend

Direct object : the book
Indirect object : my friend
        Bob sent us the memo on Thursday
Direct object : memo
Indirect object : us


Compliment
            It is similar to subject cos it is usually noun or pronoun and precede by verb or after verb
Example :
q  Dina throw the rubbish
Rubbish is complement 

There are two types of complement, they are:
v Subject complement
§  A subject complement is a word which follows a linking verb and refers to (explains or describes) the subject
§  Two kinds: predicate nominatives and predicate adjectives
ü  Predicate Nominatives
Predicate nominatives are nouns or pronouns.
Examples:
            1.  She is a secretary.
            2.  It was him.
ü  Predicate Adjective
                                    Predicate adjectives are adjectives which modify the subject.
Examples:
§  She is pretty.
§  My dog is lazy.

v Object Complement
                        An adjective, a noun, or a phrase that renames or defines in some way the object of the transitive verb; NOT the subject.
            Examples:
         I consider the driver tired.      
Object: driver               Object Complement: tired
        Paint it black.
Object: it                       Object Complement: black
        The jury found Taylor innocent.
Object: Taylor              Object Complement: innocent
Modifier
A modifier tells the time, place, or manner of the action. It is very often a prepositional phrase. A modifier of time usually come last and must suitable by tenses.
Example of prepositional phrase 
Ø  In the morning
Ø  At the college
Ø  On the table, etc

Example of modifiers :
v  I did my homework yesterday
            Modifier of time
v  she is running slowly everyday
slowly is modifier of manner            
everyday is modifier of time

 SUBJECT
  1. Subjects acts : -iwan runs
  2. subject is describe : - my teacher is good
  3. subject is acted upon (subjek menerima akibat perbuatan) : - the lion was hunted 
Simple Subject 
example : i, we they,etc.
Complete Subject
example: the big lion is running
Compound Subject
example : the teacher and the students go home 
Complete Compound Subject
example : the handsome teacher and the beautiful student are in the classroom

PREDICATE
  1. Predicate tells what the subject does:-my father sleep 
  2. The predicate describe the subject like linking verb: - my father is ugly 
  3. the predicate tells what was done to the subject :-the lion was hunted 
Simple Predicate
example: sleep, eat, work,etc
Complete Predicate
example: the dog run fast
Compund Predicate
example: the dog runs and jumps 
Complete Compund Predicate
example : the dog runs and jumps carefully
